Which display settings does Radar Display remember?
Radar Display remembers selected settings for recognized displays on this Mac. It does not save a complete named workspace or a separate preset for each task.

Which choices are saved?
| Choice | Radar Display's own memory |
|---|---|
| Physical-display connection on/off request | Saved and considered when the monitor returns. |
| Custom name | Saved for recognized physical displays and iPads. |
| Physical-display resolution/scaling and refresh rate | Saved as a preferred matching mode. |
| Physical-display rotation | Saved when selected through an available control. |
| Physical-display HDR | Saved. |
| Physical-display Color profile | Saved as a profile preference. |
| Position relative to another display | Saved separately as a layout relationship, including for Sidecar. Automatic clears that display's rule. |
| Main display and mirroring | Applied to macOS's display configuration; not stored as Radar Display's own reconnect preference in the same way as modes and Position. |
| Brightness, Automatically adjust brightness, True Tone, Preset | Read and changed through the system or display; no separate Radar Display reconnect preference. |
| Sidecar sidebar, Touch Bar, Apple Pencil double tap | Read and changed in Apple's Sidecar preferences. |
| Sidecar connection | Reflects current/requested session state; ended sessions are not automatically restarted. |
| Show all resolutions and expanded display card | Local panel state, not saved as a display preference. |
The system or display can retain values even when Radar Display does not independently save them. “Not in Radar Display's memory” does not mean a value resets when you quit.
When are mode and color preferences restored?
Radar Display checks saved physical-display preferences when a display becomes active again: for example, after replugging it, enabling it, returning its input, or reopening the lid. Launching the app can also restore eligible preferences.
The app uses a supported matching resolution/scaling mode and refresh rate. If the exact preferred mode is not currently available, it keeps the preference for a later return rather than forcing an unsupported mode or replacing it with the fallback just because that is what macOS is using.
Rotation, HDR, and Color profile restoration also depend on the relevant capability and readable state. A color profile must remain available. Read the display's error if restoration is refused.
Sidecar does not use this physical-display mode/color restoration path. Its own session and system preferences determine the iPad's available sizes and controls.
What happens to a saved Position when a screen is away?
A relationship such as Right of [monitor name] is retained while the referenced monitor is absent. The picker can show that stored reference so you can choose Automatic to clear it.
When the involved displays become active again, Radar Display attempts to rebuild the applicable relationships. Mirrored or unavailable screens are skipped. It does not continuously snap screens back while you drag their layout in System Settings.
Automatic removes only the selected display's rule and does not move it immediately. Another display's rule can still use that screen as its reference. See arranging several displays for chains and occupied positions.
What if I change settings in System Settings?
Radar Display can adopt readable, stable physical-display mode, rotation, HDR, and profile changes it observes from the system. It does not guarantee that every external edit triggers an immediate update; reopening the panel supplies another refresh.
A temporarily unavailable stored mode is protected from being overwritten by an unrelated fallback. Layout is different: an existing saved Position rule can be reapplied on a later reconnect even if you dragged the screens elsewhere while connected.
If you want to stop Radar Display imposing a relative position on reconnect, select Position → Automatic for that screen. To replace an appearance preference, choose the wanted available value and confirm it succeeds.
Can I forget a display or reset everything?
There is no Forget display, global reset, or saved-workspace deletion control in Radar Display. Unplugging a display hides it but retains its remembered record. Clearing a custom name removes that label; selecting Position → Automatic clears that relationship.
Display memory depends on stable identifiers reported by the monitor and macOS. Two identical monitors without distinct serial or other usable identifiers may not be reliably matched after reconnecting. The app avoids guessing ambiguous matches. A custom label does not solve the underlying identity ambiguity.
Do not delete system display preferences as a routine fix for a Radar Display memory issue. Record the exact setting that returns unexpectedly, the affected monitor identities and connection paths, and whether the behavior occurs on reconnect or while continuously connected. Support can then distinguish app memory from a value retained by macOS or the display.
What are the initial behavior settings?
| Setting | Initial behavior |
|---|---|
| Keep Awake | Automatic; no timed session. |
| Closed Lid Mode on a MacBook | Automatic. |
| Timed editor Duration with no session | 1 hour; custom Minutes begins at 60. |
| Displays in the timed editor | Keep Awake until you choose otherwise. |
| Battery Cutoff | Off; initial underlying threshold 20%. |
| Launch at Login | Optional; not registered automatically. |
| Background helper | Requires setup and macOS approval on a MacBook. |
| Physical monitor first discovered | On if currently active; built-in or sleeping panels also start with an on request. A discovered inactive external monitor can start off. |
| Available iPad | Off unless a Sidecar session is already live. |
| Position | Automatic until a relationship is saved. |
| Custom name | Empty. |
| Show all resolutions | Off when its section opens. |
Brightness, True Tone, HDR, profile, preset, and mode controls initially use the state reported by the system or display. Radar Display does not choose universal defaults for them.
