How do I choose HD or 4K video?

Set Record in 4K for Rear Camera, Front Camera, or Both Cameras before filming.

In this article
  1. While idle, tap Settings.
  2. Find the section for the setup you want: Rear Camera, Front Camera, or Both Cameras.
  3. Turn Record in 4K on for 4K saved videos, or off for HD.
  4. Wait for availability/configuration checks to finish, tap Done, then select Video mode and frame both views.

The three quality preferences are separate and saved for later use. Changing Rear Camera quality does not change Selfie or Both quality. In Both mode, its own preference controls both videos regardless of the individual facing preferences.

When the 4K switch is unavailable

The footer can show Checking 4K availability…, 4K unavailable for this camera., or 4K unavailable for this camera pairing. A saved 4K choice can be retained even while unavailable; the footer says Saved 4K preference retained. The displayed switch can be off/disabled while that stored preference remains 4K.

Tap Use HD for this camera in Rear/Front, or Use HD for Both in Both, when offered to explicitly replace that retained choice with HD. A different camera configuration can make the stored 4K choice usable again. Rear/Front configurations resolve unsupported quality to HD; entering Both video with a pairing that cannot support its retained 4K preference can be rejected and direct you to choose HD.

What 4K means

4K specifies the dimensions of the saved files. Cropping the portrait-held source into landscape can require enlargement. Under simultaneous-camera budget pressure the app can use a smaller capture format while retaining selected 4K output dimensions. Larger files therefore do not guarantee proportionally more detail or native 4K pixels in every crop.

4K needs more storage headroom. The app checks for at least 500 MiB available before HD recording and 2000 MiB before 4K, when the system can report capacity. These are start thresholds, not recording-duration promises. If space or camera budgeting is a problem, choose HD and retry after resolving the error.
