How do I focus on a subject or use face tracking?

Use a short preview tap for a selected point, or turn Face tracking on for automatic face priority.

Select a focus and exposure point

  1. Wait for the desired camera setup to be ready.
  2. Tap the subject briefly in the actual portrait image or landscape preview. You can also focus inside expanded landscape.
  3. Look for the selection square and FOCUS feedback. On a camera with autofocus and exposure controls, the tap selects both. A fixed-focus camera may adjust exposure only.
  4. Tap a different point if you want a new selection.

A short tap targets the selected camera. In single-camera mode both outputs share that camera's focus/exposure. Two independent cameras can retain different points. A point selected in portrait can be outside landscape's crop, so it need not show a square inside both views.

Exposure continues adjusting at the tapped point; this is not a frozen exposure lock. A sufficient scene change returns that camera to automatic adjustment. Camera rebuilds and lens handoffs can also clear selection.

Enable or disable face priority

  1. Open Camera controls.
  2. Under Tracking, turn Face tracking on or off.
  3. Close the drawer and check the preview. On supported cameras, enabled face priority uses detected faces for autofocus and displays face boxes when detection metadata is available.

The preference is on by default and applies to the cameras in use. Turning it off restores automatic scene-focus policy and hides face boxes. A previously tapped selection takes priority until it clears; changing the toggle preserves that selection. Face boxes are detection hints, not proof that focus is perfect. A camera can have automatic face priority even when no box is drawn.

Face tracking is available in the drawer during recording.

VoiceOver focus actions

Select Portrait preview, Landscape preview, or Expanded landscape preview. Use Focus at center for a center-point selection, or Resume automatic focus to clear the selection. The preview's value reports automatic focus or the supported selected controls, plus zoom. There is no visible Resume automatic focus button in the standard viewfinder.

If focus feedback does not appear, tap within the image away from overlaid controls, the teleprompter, or the landscape window's border, and wait for configuration to finish. Some lenses cannot change focus; distance and available light also affect the result.
